Course Program

Lesson 1

An oil painting of two figures, one pouring tea and the other reaching for oranges, with a glowing highlight in the center, creating warmth in the scene.

Sketching and underpainting with oil

  • Sketching is the foundation of any great painting. It’s where you lay out your composition, decide on proportions, and capture the essence of your subject. When it comes to oil painting, you can start with a pencil or charcoal sketch directly on your canvas or board.

  • Underpainting refers to the initial layer of colour applied before building up thicker layers. It helps establish values (light and dark areas) and provides a roadmap for subsequent layers. Some artists use monochromatic under-paintings, while others introduce colour at this stage.

Lesson 2

Painting of four deer in a colorful forest, with streaks of orange and pink in the background and teal and blue hues highlighting the deer in the foreground.

Harmonize your colours

  • Ah, colour—the magical ingredient! Harmonizing colours involves creating a pleasing palette that works together seamlessly. You can achieve this through colour theory, understanding complementary colours, and experimenting with different combinations.

  • Consider warm and cool tones, analogous colour schemes, and the emotional impact of different colours. Remember, colour harmony can evoke specific moods and feelings in your viewers.

Lesson 3

Painting by Alvira Ferreira showing a cozy living room, reflecting the isolation and comfort during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Interiors: a study in surfaces, textures, and pattern

  • Interiors provide a rich tapestry of visual elements. Think about the textures of fabric, the sheen of polished wood, and the play of light on various surfaces.

  • Experiment with capturing the cozy warmth of a well-loved armchair, the intricate patterns of wallpaper, or the reflections in a vintage mirror. Pay attention to details—it’s where the magic lies!

Lesson 4

Portrait by Alvira Ferreira of a fluffy cat with wide, expressive eyes, blending curiosity and innocence.

Paint a pet

  • Ah, our furry (or feathered, or scaly) friends! Painting pets can be incredibly rewarding. Start by observing your subject—whether it’s a loyal dog, a curious cat, or a majestic parrot.

  • Capture their personality, their fur or feathers, and those soulful eyes.

Lesson 5

Alvira Ferreira’s oil painting of people relaxing at Silvermine Dam, reinterpreting classic outdoor scenes with vibrant colors.

Full Body figure Painting

  • Taking on a full-body figure is a wonderful challenge. Whether you’re painting a portrait or a more narrative scene, pay attention to proportions, anatomy, and gesture.

  • Consider the pose—the way the body leans, stands, or reclines. And don’t forget about clothing and drapery—it adds movement and character.
